"Drive" is the story of a mechanic and part time stunt movie driver (only called "The Driver")who moonlights at times as a getaway driver for various criminals. His boss at the mechanic shop, played by Bryan Cranston, wants to get into the race car business with a mobster (Albert Brooks) and use Gosling as the
driver. Gosling's character lives a solitary life that is disrupted when he meets his next door neighbor and her son. When the neighbor's husband gets out of jail and as payment for protection provided to him in prison, has to do one last job, Gosling's character decides to help him out and keep his family safe. Of course, it wouldn't be much of a movie if everything went according to plan.

One of the many things "Drive" has going for it is the cast assembled for it. Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston,
Ron Perlman and Albert Brooks all give great performances. Brooks gives an impressively outstanding performance, playing a cold as ice mobster. There is very little dialogue spoken in this movie, it's all about looks. Gosling & Mulligan, as the neighbor, have great chemistry and you don't need dialogue to know what they are thinking. Because of the sparsely spoken dialogue, the sound editing of the movie is very important here. "Drive" was nominated for Best Sound Editing at this year's Academy Awards and I think it has a real shot at winning. There is a dialogue-free scene in an elevator that is beautifully shot and is also very very brutal at the same time. The sound editing was pitch perfect in that scene, and all throughout this movie. The only issue, in relation to sound, I had was with the soundtrack. I understand the use of several songs, but they still felt out of place in this movie. One minor thing I really liked about
this movie was the jacket that the Driver wore. It starts of as a nice, clean jacket, but as Gosling's character gets deeper into trouble, the jacket gets dirtier. It was a nice touch.

I really liked "Drive" and I give it 4 out of 5 stars. I thought the performances were great and the camera work was smooth and crisp. The soundtrack is my only real quibble here, and it wasn't terrible, just distracting at times. I would really recommend "Drive" and I seriously consider it to be one of the better films I've seen of 2011.
